JAMMU, April 30: Militants today struck in a big way in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir killing four Hindus out of the 11 persons they had abducted.
The militants freed two of the 11 persons but the fate of five remained unknown. Director general of state police Mr Gopal Sharma said that militants kidnapped nine non-Muslims and two Muslims from separate places of Basantgarh area in Udhampur this afternoon.
The abducted people - nine Hindus and two Muslims - were taken to higher reaches of the Basantgarh mountaineous belt.
The two Muslims abductees were released later in the evening while bodies of four of nine Hindus were found by the police, he said, adding that the fate of five was still not known and search parties had been rushed into the mountainous region to try and find them.
The higher reaches of Udhampur and Doda had once become a hot-bed of abductions and subsequent killings by militants but the process had stopped after the state government created Village Defence Committees.
