Security for Taslima after imam announces reward on her head

Kolkata, June. 24 (PTI): Security for controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen has been tightened after an imam here announced a reward for eliminating her and demanded her expulsion from the country.

Security personnel have been guarding Taslima’s residence and screening her visitors after Syed Noorul Rahman Barkati, the imam of Tipu Sultan mosque, announced a reward of Rs 50,000 on her head.

“Yes, I have offered a reward of Rs 50,000 to anyone who eliminates her as she continues to damage the secular fabric of this country with her comments,” Barkati told PTI today.

He demanded the writer’s immediate expulsion from India, where she has been living for more than a year now.

Denying that she had hurt the sentiments of any religion, Taslima said she had not received any direct threat from anyone but some of her recent statements at a function might have been distorted.

“It is my firm conviction that my statements at a recent literary programme at the Bangla Academy have been distorted to the advantage of fundamentalist organisations,” she told PTI here.

Expressing her resolve to stay on in West Bengal, she confirmed that security around her house has been tightened in the last few days.

“I like to stay in West Bengal since democracy is well protected here and there is freedom of expression. I have total faith in all religions and I have not uttered any word which may have hurt religious sentiments of any community,” she said.

இஸ்லாம் ஒரு சமத்துவ மதம், அதில் தலித்துகளே சேருங்கள் என்று பொய் பித்தலாட்டம் ஆடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள் பலர். அதில் சமீபத்தில் போன்பார்ட் என்பவரும் உளறிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார். இவர் ஒரு முஸ்லீம் என்பது என் சந்தேகம். மூக்கறுபட்டவன் தன்னை கிண்டல் செய்வார்கள் என்று மூக்கறுந்தால் சொர்க்கம் தெரியும் என்று பரப்பி எல்லோரைடைய மூக்கையும் அறுத்தது போல, இவரும் கிளம்பியிருக்கிறார் என்று நினைக்கிறேன்.
மூக்கறுந்தால் சொர்க்கம் தெரியாது. முஸ்லீமானால் சமத்துவம் வராது. இந்த காலத்தில் கூட முக்கியமான சவூதி ஷேக் ஒருவர் கூறியதை இங்கே காட்டுகிறேன்.

Saudi sheik: ‘Slavery is a part of Islam’
Leading government cleric, author of country’s religious curriculum

A leading Saudi government cleric and author of the country’s religious curriculum believes Islam advocates slavery.

“Slavery is a part of Islam,” says Sheik Saleh Al-Fawzan, according to the independent Saudi Information Agency, or SIA.

In a lecture recorded on tape by SIA, the sheik said, “Slavery is part of jihad, and jihad will remain as long there is Islam.”

His religious books are used to teach 5 million Saudi students, both within the country and abroad, including the United States.

Al Fawzan – a member of the Senior Council of Clerics, Saudi Arabia’s highest religious body – says Muslims who contend Islam is against slavery “are ignorant, not scholars.”

“They are merely writers,” he said, according to SIA. “Whoever says such things is an infidel.”

Al-Fawzan’s best-known textbook, “Al-Tawheed – Monotheism,” says most Muslims are polytheists, and their blood and money are therefore free for the taking by “true Muslims.”

SIA said although the Saudi government claims religious curriculum is being reformed, Al-Fawzan’s books are still in wide use.

Al-Fawzan is a member of the Council of Religious Edicts and Research, the Imam of Prince Mitaeb Mosque in Riyadh and a professor at Imam Mohamed Bin Saud Islamic University, Saudi Arabia’s main center of learning for the strict Wahhabi interpretation of Islam.

SIA noted Al-Fawzan, a leading opponent of curriculum reform, opposes elections and demonstrations as Western influences, is against Arab women marrying non- Arab Muslims and has issued a fatwa forbidding the watching of television.

Al-Fawzan has threatened to behead a Saudi writer and scholar, Sheik Hassan Al-Maliki, for his criticism of Wahhabism, according to SIA. Al-Maliki was fired from his position with the ministry of education after writing a 50- page paper criticizing Al-Fawzan’s book “Al-Tawheed.”
